Identifying Potential Cropland Losses When Conserving 30% and 50% Earth with Different Approaches and Spatial Scales

Biodiversity conservation is the cornerstone for sustainable development. Bold targets provide last opportunities to halt human-driven mass extinction. Recently, bold have been proposed protect 30% or 50% of Earth. However, little known about its potential impacts on cropland. We identify cropland losses when and global terrestrial area given back nature by 2030/2050, at three spatial scales (global, biome country) using two approaches (“nature-only landscapes” “shared landscapes”). find that different targets, applied will lead losses: (1) At scale, it possible Earth while having minimum losses. (2) 0.64% 8.54% be lost globally in 2030 2050 under nature-only approach contrast, shared substantially reduces number countries confronted losses, demanding only 0% 2.59% 2050. (3) national causes 3.58% 10.73% 2050, requires 0.77% 7.55% Our results indicate could considered, especially adopting approach, we suggest ambitious (protecting least 2030) UN Conference (COP 15) ensure a future
